Dear School Families,
In just a few weeks, on March 10th, I am embarking for pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. The Camino or “the Way” of St. James is ancient route that begins in the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France and ends in northern Spanish city of Santiago at the Cathedral of St. James. This journey represents the culmination of over a year of planning and a bucket list check mark. I am both excited and anxious about walking the 500 miles.
Friends and family have wondered “Why are you going”? The southsider in me likes to say because I’m 42 and it’s cheaper than a Corvette… The real reasons are numerous and more complicated. I need time and quiet to listen and hear what God is saying to me. I am often whelmed with the execution of my mission in Catholic Schools. I am constantly worried about the growth and wellbeing of our students and community. Over the past several years I have neglected my own spiritual development. And I have a favor to ask of God. To put it simply I need to refill my “spiritual tank”.
I was recently asked why now and not summer. My original plan was to take the journey through Lent. When Fr. Paulson was forced to change the return date on his sabbatical, I pushed my start to ensure I was here for Ash Wednesday and he will be here for Holy Week. I have now planned a pace for walking 33 days, one day for each year Christ walked on earth.
This is also a “slow” time for me in the CTK school year. We made it through Catholic Schools Week, Science Fair, and Special Guest Day. We threw our awesome auction! We interviewed and tested almost 50 families securing the kindergarten class of 2026. I will be here to review and help get out the 2nd trimester report cards. I will be here to see the 3rd graders celebrate Mardi Gras by parading through the campus in their crewes. And, I will be here for Ash Wednesday as we begin our Lentin journey together. I will return along with students from Easter Break in time for First Communion.
I’ve read August is a gorgeous time to be on the Camino. I have no doubt, but August is also a very busy time around CTK. Hopefully, a lifetime of Chicago winters and the hearty layer of “cushion” around my midsection will help me deal with the cold and snow through the Pyrenees and the rains of Galatea in early spring. I have worked in Catholic School for over a decade now and could never afford to take this journey during peak season.
When I am away should a problem arise Fr. Paulson is due to return in early April, and Kate Doherty and Fr. Vince are available if necessary. Mrs. Bucci, and Mr. Orlina are both experienced administrators. We have a professional and experienced faculty and staff and I have no doubts that they, Mrs. Wilson, and Mrs. Thornbury can hold the fort in my absence.
I will be sharing this information with students next week by giving them a brief history lesson on the route and purpose of the Camino pilgrimage.
I hope that you will keep me in your prayers as I will have you in mine as I embark on this journey into self and the adventure of a lifetime. I hope to return to you all fully charged in faith and spirit.
Some good news on our CLUB space. A few weeks ago, due to heavy rainfall and an obstruction in our storm drain system, we got water in Club. We brought a crew out to clear the obstruction, and good news, we made it through this weekend's rain without any issues. Now that we are confident the fix worked we will take the next steps towards having the room up and running.
The end of the 2nd trimester is this Friday. Report cards will be given out next Wednesday, March 1st.
• 7:45 A.M. EARLY START TIME - ASH WEDNESDAY-MARCH 1st: Please mark your calendars: Next Wednesday March 1st is Ash Wednesday. We will begin school at 7:45 a.m. to help alleviate some of the traffic congestion and to help keep the kids safe. Please start dropping off your students at 7:30 a.m. There is NO morning assembly. All are welcome to join the school in worship at the 11 a.m. Mass.
• Wednesday, March 10th – Teacher In-Service Day. School and CLUB are closed. Have a nice day off.

RE-REGISTRATION FORM IN TODAYS FAMILY ENVELOPE: The Re-Registration Form for the 2017-2018 school year is in today’s Family Envelope. The re-registration fee is $375 per student. Please be sure to complete the required information. The form and non-refundable Re-Registration Fee are due on Tuesday, March 7th. The fee may be paid in full or in two installments; first installment due with form and the 2nd installment is due by March 22, 2017.
The registration fee secures your child’s spot for the next school year and is non-refundable. In addition to securing your child’s spot, the registration fee is used for textbooks, computers, workbooks, paper, and supplies, Diocesan fees (technology fee, student accident fee, health fee, accreditation fee, school department fee, CTN (Catholic Television Network), AR STAR Testing, student insurance fee and health fee. Fifty dollars of the registration fee is allocated for each child as a classroom fee, $10 of which is used for the auction class project, and the remaining for classroom items, such as Weekly Reader, novels, some field trips (one trip with a bus), and project items, etc.
FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION: There are three different types of financial aid available for families with children at CTK:
1. Families may apply for diocesan assistance through F.A.C.E. Applications can be requested from the School Office or online.
2. The online application for FACE tuition assistance direct link is: (https://online.factsmgt.com/aid) Due by March 13th.
3. The BASIC Fund offers tuition assistance to families with newly entering students in grades K-8. For information see http://www.basicfund.org/index.htmlfor further information, application, and deadlines. Deadline for the BASIC Fund is March 10, 2017.
4. A limited amount of financial aid is available for tuition assistance from the Christ the King School Children’s Fund with a direct link to FACTS (http://online.factsmgt.com/aid) Hard copies are available in the office.
5. Applications must be submitted by March 13th.
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION: It's time to turn in those Box Tops! Our second Box Tops contest deadline is fast approaching! Please turn in all your Box Tops (and Labels for Education) by tomorrow, February 22, to either your child's classroom or the front office. If turning into the office, please make sure to include your child's grade so the proper class gets the credit. The class that turns in the most Box Tops and Labels for Education will win a popsicle party at the end of the year. ATTENTION 6th, 7th AND 8th GRADE PARENTS: The girls volleyball season is about to begin and we’d like to invite all who are interested to participate in this Spring’s season. If you are a parent and interested in coaching this year, please contact John Hanecak by phone at

If your daughter is interested in playing, please print and complete the attached registration and permission forms and turn them in to the CTK office by February 24.
