Dear School Families,
Last week Mrs. Dewes, Mr. Orlina, and I had the opportunity to attend the Innovative Learning Conference that was held in Hillsborough. It was a wonderful experience. We attended presentations from some of the world’s foremost scholars and witnessed highly respected educators demonstrate best practice in a variety of fields. I attended a presentation by Charlotte Danielson who literally wrote the book on evaluating teacher effectiveness. Mrs. Dewes participated in a workshop where “doodling” was demonstrated as a highly effective memory cue and note taking skill if incorporated in a Visual Thinking approach. Mr. Orlina and I sat in on a lecture on Self-Regulated Learning that challenged much of what we thought we knew about how to help students learn how to learn. By the end of the two days I couldn’t wait to get back here to CTK to talk with our colleagues and put what we learned into action. Thank you to Mr. Orlina and Mrs. Dewes for barting across the bay to attend and many thanks to the faculty and staff who filled in and made it possible for us to go practice lifelong learning.

PLEASANT HILL FOURTH OF JULY COMMISSION: The Fourth of July Commission has presented a check to Christ the King School for $1896 for the July 4, 2017 Firecracker 5K Fun Run. Thank you to all who participated in this fun event.

FAMILY SERVICE/CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENTS: The online assignment system for classroom activities rolls out this week. You will receive an e-mail with a direct link to the assignment page for each grade for which you have a child enrolled. If you do not receive an e-email by FRIDAY evening, October 27, send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org stating your name, your child’s name and grade, and the e-mail address that you want entered into the system. Please allow 24 hours for adjustments and an email resend to be completed.
Once in the system, you can view the activities assigned to you, as well as open activities still needing volunteers. Room parents and event volunteer coordinators may add activities throughout the year, so there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved. The system is configured to send reminder notifications one week prior to your assigned activities. You are responsible for finding your own substitutes and updating the system.

PHOTO-VIDEO PUBLISHING: This year’s Photo-Video Publishing Authorization Form is in your Family Envelope and today’s download. We have many opportunities to both take and use photos and videos of our student community. Please read the form, sign and return it to the School Office by Wednesday, November 1st. Note that we will assume that you give us permission to publish if you do not return this form.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP DONATION REQUEST FOR ANIMALS IN THE NORTH BAY: Student Leadership is partnering with Pet Food Express in Pleasant Hill to help those animals affected by all the horrific fires in the North Bay. Pet Food Express is donating new or used dog or cat crates in all sizes. Many animals need to be in crates in order to be in shelters, so please help. If you are able to help, please bring your crates to Pet Food Express, 2158 Contra Costa Blvd., Pleasant Hill. Anything is helpful, especially to those who have lost everything. Thank you!!
• Halloween Parade: Students and Staff will gather around the lawn area at 8:00 a.m. after morning assembly.
• Halloween Costume “BOOS” and Don’ts!:
The costume must allow the child to function as a student while in class (all morning).
Students need to wear regular shoes for the day while out at recess and PE. Shoes must be changed after the parade.
Care is to be taken and consideration given to the ages of our Student Body. Costumes should not be too scary, gross, or violent.
The following are NOT allowed: weapons, gory makeup, animals, scary clown costumes, or immodest clothing (no bare midriff/short skirts/low cut necklines, etc.).
Students who do not wish to wear a costume may wear orange, black, or white colored non-uniform dress or their school uniform. Please refer to the Free Dress guidelines listed in the Parent-Student Handbook.
Students attending CLUB CTK after school should bring a change of clothes for the afternoon.

• CLUB CTK Halloween Celebration: On Tuesday, October 31st, we will be celebrating Halloween at Club CTK. It will be a fun filled afternoon. We will be decorating pumpkins, decorating cupcakes and doing Halloween crafts.
Please email us at CLUB@ctkschool.org if your child will be joining us, even if they regularly attend CLUB, so we can purchase supplies ahead of time! We are looking forward to a fun afternoon!

WOMEN’S DAY OF RECOLLECTION: All women are welcome to join Sr. Carla Kovack, a San Rafael Dominican Sister, who will offer a morning of reflection on Saturday, October 28th from
8:30-12 p.m. “A Long Loving Look” will lead us to see the revelation of God in creation. Sr. Carla will incorporate Pope Francis’s words and current scientific understanding of our cosmos ~ to lead us to see the interconnection of all God’s creation. Tickets ($5.) will be on sale beginning October 14. Please contact Sr. Dominic at the Parish House if you are interested in attending.
CARONDELET HIGH SCHOOL/DE LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE: De La Salle Open House will be held on Sunday, November 5th from 10:00-12:00 p.m. Carondelet Open House will be held Sunday, November 5th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Tour the campus and meet teachers and students.
SCRIP: From October 21st- 31st ShopWithScrip will be celebrating their Anniversary with 11 days of Flash Bonuses! They will be offering a new set of 24-hour flash bonuses from different retailers each day. Make sure you are all set up on ShopWithScrip and PrestoPay so you don’t miss this opportunity.

CTK is aware that Safeway scrip is currently unavailable on ShopWithScrip. They have reassured us they are working with Safeway to replenish the cards and make them available to us as soon as possible. In the meantime, please browse the website for many other opportunities to purchase scrip and reach your $225 SFA goal.
PARENT ASSOCIATION: Please join us next Monday, October 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the Media Center for the next Parent Association meeting, this meeting is open to all parents. One of the items we will be discussing where we would like the income from The Monsignor Wade Golf Tournament for next years tournament to go. Hope to see you there!
